Guitar Lessons Chelmsford

If you're in Chelmsford and want to learn guitar, I offer relaxed, practical lessons that focus on the music you actually want to play. Whether you're a complete beginner picking up a guitar for the first time or you've been playing for years and want to sharpen up your technique, I'll shape every session around your goals, your pace and the kind of music that gets you excited.

I'm Tom Ryder - a singer-songwriter, performer and producer with more than 20 years of experience in music. I've performed at over 300 weddings across the UK and Europe, opened for James Morrison at Down Hall, and released original music as a solo artist and with bands including LOZT and The Kazans. My solo EP Strings Attached was named BBC Introducing Track of the Week. As a tutor, I've helped hundreds of students of all ages and abilities get to grips with the guitar and genuinely enjoy the process.

I'm more or less self-taught, and that shapes how I teach. I focus on the practical side of playing - getting you strumming songs, building confidence and having fun - rather than burying you in theory you don't need yet. That said, if you want to explore theory, notation or graded learning up to Grade 5, I'm very happy to guide you through that too.

What We Can Cover

Lessons are tailored to your goals. Depending on what you’re looking for, we can explore:

  • Acoustic or electric guitar

  • Chords, strumming patterns, fingerstyle and lead

  • Playing by ear, reading tab or notation

  • Songwriting and arranging

  • Building stage confidence

  • How to practise effectively between sessions

If you have a favourite artist or song you'd love to play, bring it along. I'd rather build a lesson around something that motivates you than work through exercises that don't connect. My own influences range from Newton Faulkner and John Mayer to Oasis and The Who, so whether you lean towards fingerpicking or power chords, we'll find plenty of common ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need my own guitar to start lessons?

It helps to have one so you can practise between sessions, but don't worry if you haven't bought one yet. I can advise you on what to look for based on your budget and the style of music you want to play.

What ages do you teach?

I teach students of all ages, from children through to adults picking up the guitar for the first time later in life. Every lesson is adapted to suit the individual.

Do you teach electric and acoustic guitar?

Yes, both. Some students focus on one, others enjoy mixing it up. We'll work with whatever suits your interests.

How long does it take to learn guitar?

It depends on what you want to achieve, but most students are playing recognisable songs within the first few weeks. The key is regular practice - even 15 to 20 minutes a day makes a real difference.

Can I switch between in-person and online lessons?

Absolutely. Some students prefer to mix the two depending on their week. I'm flexible with this.

Where in Chelmsford do lessons take place?

In-person lessons can be arranged locally in Chelmsford. I also teach students across Essex, including nearby areas like Braintree, Harlow and Bishop's Stortford. If you're not sure whether I cover your area, just get in touch and we'll work something out.
